The speech came as his administration intensifies legal efforts against reporters
Donald Trump delivered a rescheduled, smaller White House correspondents’ dinner speech at the Waldorf Astoria, months after an April shooting disrupted the original event.
Instead of the usual self-deprecating humor, he spent much of the hour-long address hurling personal insults at journalists and political foes, mocking their appearances and identities, and drawing mostly stunned silence.
The speech came as his administration intensifies legal efforts against reporters, including subpoenas for New York Times journalists over Air Force One security reporting. Trump defended targeting journalists to find leakers, insisted the legal fight would continue despite withdrawn subpoenas, and used the event to announce—via a “Trump 2028” hat—that he plans to run for another term.
Security was tight, attendance was pared down to mostly reporters, and the evening highlighted the deep tension between Trump and the press despite the dinner’s traditional role as a lighthearted celebration of the First Amendment.
