A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 upper-stage rocket is expected to crash into the moon after drifting since its January 2025 launch, when it carried two private lunar landers. Space-tracking expert Bill Gray predicts the rocket will hit near Einstein Crater on the moon’s sunlit western limb at about 5,400 mph.
The impact should create a small crater and a dust plume that telescopes may observe for several minutes. Scientists say the event offers a rare chance to study how human-made debris affects the lunar surface and what risks similar collisions could pose to future astronauts and moon bases.
Researchers are not alarmed, but the crash highlights the need for better debris tracking as more missions head to the moon. NASA and South Korea’s Danuri orbiter plan to capture before-and-after images of the site.
