A new study suggests that heavy television watching in midlife may be linked to later brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, especially in men. Researchers followed more than 1,700 people for nearly 24 years, tracking their TV habits and later examining their brains with MRI scans. They found that men who watched TV frequently showed smaller brain volumes in Alzheimer’s-vulnerable areas, more white matter damage tied to cognitive decline and dementia, and smaller frontal and occipital lobes, which help with planning, decision-making, and visual processing.
The study did not find the same association in women, though researchers are still exploring why. One possible explanation is that men may be more likely to watch TV for long, uninterrupted stretches; biological or hormonal differences may also play a role. Interestingly, people with sedentary jobs did not show the same brain changes, suggesting that the type of sedentary behavior matters. Passive TV watching may affect the brain differently than mentally active sitting, such as reading or working.
Researchers emphasized that exercise did not fully explain away the association, meaning regular physical activity alone may not cancel out the potential effects of long periods of passive screen time. Experts also noted that TV itself is not necessarily harmful. The concern is when hours of passive viewing replace activities known to support brain health, such as movement, social interaction, learning, and mentally stimulating hobbies.
